an indigenous integrated wellness community

The ‘Anapamu’ Alliance derives it’s name from several sacred sites in Southern California on the Santa Barbara coastal lands. ‘Anapamu’ is a Sᑋamala word for a place of rising / the ascending place. At the Barbareňo site, there is a stone slab with a large carved void which aligns perfectly with the sun’s descent on the winter solstice. This site was used by our ancestors as a point of connection between this realm and the sky realms.

Our mission is to facilitate a continuation of local Chumash indigenous arts, wellness, and culture. As a grassroots effort, we believe that the return of culture, arts, land, and language are necessary aspects of indigenous intergenerational healing.

We are currently working with partners, individuals, and organizations towards the return of unceded Chumash territories into an indigenous land trust.

If you are a property owner, organization, or are simply interested in offering skills to support this work, please connect with us below.

The ‘Anapamu’ Alliance is an umbrella name for the collaborative efforts between Carmen Sandoval and Amber B. Pagaling, whose lineages are deeply woven into the Santa Ynez Band of Sᑋamala Chumash Indians located in Santa Ynez, CA. We are working to establish an indigenous community space for other lineal descendants in the nearby territories.

[shoo-mah-woosh-tosh]

A place for the practice of healing, arts, language, living ecological land management, and cultural reclamation. There are many extended lineal families of indigenous Chumash origin in our California territories spanning from Malibu [Humaliwo] all the way North up to Cayucos, the Channel islands, and then to the interior lower San Joaquin Valley. We believe there should be space beyond our tribe for these relatives to foster a cultural reclamation as well as personal and intergenerational healing. We envision several phases to anchor in a dynamic indigenous community and eventually use co-creative arts and culture to hold space for conciliation and reconciliation within a local surrounding area.

* REMATRIATION: Indigenous women-led work to restore sacred relationships between indigenous people and our ancestral land, honoring our matrilineal societies, and in opposition of patriarchal violence and dynamics. [ as defined by sogoreate-landtrust.org ]
